Where Voices Are Heard

Freedom and basic human rights are what allow us to live with dignity. Without democracy to protect them, they can disappear overnight. Having fled a military dictatorship where those rights were stripped away, standing in front of the U.S. Capitol brings a profound sense of hope and relief. Looking up at this dome, I am reminded of what democracy truly means: having the power to choose leaders who will listen, speak for us, and defend the rights guaranteed to every person.
